Knowing These 6 Tricks will Help You Avoid Phishing Attacks on Your Business – Small Business Trends

February 5, 2018 by Asif Nazeer Leave a Comment

[ad_1]

Hackers are always coming up with new sophisticated phishing schemes to steal any personal information they can.

Hackers want to gain access to your email because so much of valuable personal information can be found there.

Case in point: Earlier this month, there was a pretty serious phishing attack that targeted Gmail users. As NBC News reported:

The worm — which arrived in users’ inboxes posing as an email from a trusted contact — asked users to check out an attached “Google Docs,” or GDocs, file. Clicking on the link took them to a real Google security page, where users were asked to give permission for the fake app, posing as GDocs, to manage users’ email account.

To make matters worse, the worm also sent itself out to all of the affected users’ contacts — Gmail or otherwise — reproducing itself hundreds of times any time a single user fell for it.

Although I wasn’t impacted by this phishing scam, millions of people were. I knew some of them.

Luckily, most of my friends were savvy enough to recognize the scam for what it was and reported and deleted the emails. Most, but not all, unfortunately.

Don’t become the next victim of hackers. Keep your personal data safe and secure.

Here’s how to recognize phishing and how to avoid it.

How Phishing Works

At the most basic level, here’s how a phishing scam works:

You receive an urgent message of some sort. It’s from a trusted source (e.g., a social network, a store you shop at online, your bank). The email looks real – it even uses the logo and perfectly mimics color scheme of that company.

All of these emails ask you click on a (malicious) link that takes you to a fake log-in page or a page asking you to grant permission. This is how the hackers get your personal data – you unknowingly give it to them, all while thinking you’re just logging into one of your accounts.

How to Avoid It

What can you do if you suspect phishing?

Here are some simple tips courtesy of Citrix ShareFile, which helps businesses securely and easily share files:

1. Don’t panic or click on anything until you know it’s legitimate. One of your contacts just shared a Google Doc with you out of the blue. Odd, right? Yes! That person has no reason to share a document with you. While you might be curious to see what it is, stop. Don’t open it. Investigate first. Email your contact and ask if they actually shared a doc with you.

2. Check for red flags, such as strange email addresses or misspellings. In the Google Docs phishing attack, the email was sent to a fake email address ([email protected]), not their address. That’s a clear giveaway that something phishy is going on.

3. Notify the company that’s being impersonated. Do a simple Google search to get contact info for the company (in Google’s case, they have an entire page on how to report a variety scams). Also make sure to click on the down arrow next to the Reply button and click “Report Phishing” to report the email.

4. Share on your social media channels. Social media is faster than mainstream media. The Google phishing attack was another example. I found out about this scam after a couple of my friends posting about it – long before a single news story was written.

5. Call your friends and family. Alert anyone you think could be impacted by the phishing attack.

6. Email any listservs you’re on. Help stop the scam as soon as you learn about it so it won’t continue to spread.

Shopify Adds Shipping Label Printing to Mobile App, A Boon for Small Businesses – Small Business Trends

February 4, 2018 by Asif Nazeer Leave a Comment

[ad_1]

Shopify (NYSE: SHOP) has introduced shipping label printing capability on its mobile app so you can fulfill orders directly from your phone.

Shopify Shipping Labels on Mobile

With the new update, users can create and print shipping labels as well as manage shipping workflows on Android and iOS devices. The new mobile features come after Shopify added multiple updates to its mobile platform in November of 2017 for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping period.

For a small business with online stores, shipping is an integral part of the process. Being able to quickly print shipping labels makes it much easier to process customers’ orders. And with the new mobile capability, you can do it from anywhere.

Kurt Heinrich, Product Manager at Shopify, writes on the company blog, “Now, instead of having to use a computer to purchase and print your shipping labels, you can complete the process anywhere. No more making notes of tasks you need to wrap up when you get back to your desk, or waiting to get shipping labels created.”

Now You Can Order and Print Shopify Shipping Labels on Mobile App

App Features

The app gives you access to all of the features you currently have with Shopify Shipping. This includes lower shipping rates than retail from the carriers the company supports: UPS, DHL Express, USPS and Canada Post.

When you get an order, all you do is tap the “create shipping label” button, select the carrier and shipping service, purchase the label and print it. Using AirPrint or Google Cloud Print, the app is able to automatically detect nearby printers.

Benefit for Small Businesses

One of the challenges of competing with large online retailers is being able to fulfill orders and ship them at all hours of the day. The new Shopify Shipping Labels on mobile app lets you fulfill your orders to start the shipping process as fast as possible.

To start using all of the shipping features on your mobile device, download or update the Shopify app for Android or iOS.

Hand Puppet Business Cartoon

Hand puppets are funny; they just are.

I’ve done a few cartoons with them before, but this one is my favorite, I think. I get to use the word “proxy,” the puppet is named “Mr. Handsington,” and I quite like how the cityscape in the background turned out.

I don’t know that this would go over in real life given the current job climate, but I think we can all agree that at the very least, hand puppets are funny.

New ezeep Dash Service Moves Small Business Printing to the Cloud

February 1, 2018 by Asif Nazeer Leave a Comment

[ad_1]

ThinPrint Cloud Services has a new solution called ezeep Dash which can move your entire print management system to the cloud.

Printers and printer drivers can now be fully managed in one portal without a server while being able to print locally if there is no internet connection. The company says ezeep Dash simplifies the overall printing process by keeping the printing path short and direct.

Optimizing printing services is still a challenge for small businesses. According to the State of SMB Document Management survey by Xerox, 64 percent of small businesses can’t track printer usage or costs. This is despite the fact they are using a more paper-intensive process within their organizations.

Whether you have drivers for printers on all your computers or a server, ezeep Dash looks to remove these barriers to make printing much easier for your small business.

In a release about the new service, Christoph Hammer, CEO at ThinPrint Cloud Services Inc, said:

“With nearly 20 years of experience in network printing and our long-standing cooperation as a member of the Cloud Printing Alliance with virtually all renowned printer manufacturers, we’re able to offer our customers not just a completely serverless, intuitively-operated solution, but also a continuously growing pool of the most up-to-date printer drivers.”

ezeep Dash Features

According to the company, ezeep Dash offers a server-free print management solution with fast setup. It centralizes the management of printers and drivers in the cloud for direct IP printing. When a driver or IP address changes, it is automatically updated using the ezeep Dash Agent.

Users can carry out mobile, BYOD, guest, and remote printing tasks with any device, from any location to any printer.

What ezeep Dash Promises - Dump Your Print Servers and Forget About Driver Updates

What’s more ezeep Dash keeps printing local, meaning it doesn’t take place via the cloud. So printing in your office doesn’t require an internet connection.

You can try ezeep Dash with a free 30-day demo account for 10 users with support for Microsoft Windows 7 and higher. It will be available for Apple MacOS version 10.10 (Yosemite) and higher soon.

Printing Efficiency

The Xerox report pointed out the wait time for a document at a business with a shared central printer comes out to around three minutes for each employee or 13 hours annually in the US. Whether you have one or more employees, those wasted hours can be prevented with a print management solution.
